One of the unique aspects of Project Vine is the Enrichment Block. During F-Block, members of the program can develop and work on projects of their own design, which might be weeks, months or even all-year in length. Some of these projects currently include the study of American Sign Language, the creation of a portfolio of cartoon drawings (check them out on the improved staff page:) and the writing of this program blog. The following article is about one program member’s recent efforts to raise funds to help support a member of our larger school and Island community. Kudos, Marlainey!
This fall, I have been using my time in our F-Block Enrichment Program to work on coming up with fundraising ideas and other ways we could contribute to the community as a program.
The last few weeks I worked on a fundraiser to raise money for Steve, our postman here at the school, who needed funds to pay for his new power wheelchair.
We gathered art from students in Project Vine and turned those photographs and drawings into postcards to sell during lunch on the 28th and 29th of September. Each postcard was $2.00, and $3.00 if you wanted to write a message to a person and have it delivered to their homeroom.
The fundraiser was an opportunity to learn what it takes to collaborate with people who have different skills and different things to offer, and all of the pieces that go into something like this. Fletch and I spent a lot of time trying to print the postcards to look their best on the paper we had, which turned out great but took not only a lot of time but a lot of patience and trying different ways when one way didn’t work out.
Because there is so much going on in the world right now that we as students want to help with but don’t necessarily know how, it was good to start by doing something directly for someone we know.
All in all, we raised a little over $200 and are thankful to everyone who contributed to this event!
