Because the classic model of school is not the best fit for all students, the Alternative Education Program known as Project Vine at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School provides opportunities for learners to experiment with different strategies for learning about and engaging with their world. By focusing on individual student needs, greater community involvement, interdisciplinary connections, and authentic work, Project Vine strives to provide education for life up to and beyond graduation which enriches intellect, wellness and joy.
Students in Project demonstrate their mastery of writing, history, math and science through meaningful, authentic contributions to their lives, to the program or to the community which are reviewed by peers, other students, teachers and community members and which they themselves take part in publicizing using our own web presence, as well as school and local media.
Project Vine consists of between around 50 students in 9th-12th grade enrolled at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School, taking some or all of their core classes in the program, with a consistent group of peers and staff. Many of these classes, as well as whole program activities, take place in a dedicated space (The Project Vine Suite) of 4 classrooms and a student work area which students are invited to make their own through care and personalization not usually found in public school spaces. Students in Project Vine share their core teachers and an adjustment counselor who meet regularly to discuss and plan strategies for individual students, as well as to plan interconnected content and stimulating authentic activities. Students in Project Vine also meet together as a whole group every Friday during Vine Fridays, along with staff, for community building activities.
